The Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is the world's premier event for youth sailors and has been held every year since the inaugural event in 1971. Over the years many of the worlds sailing greats have been initially identified by their success at this event. This list includes names such as Ben Ainslie (GBR), Robert Schiedt (BRA), and New Zealand's own stars like Russell Coutts (NZL),Dean Barker (NZL) & Stewart Bannatyne (NZL). The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team is now widely recognised as New Zealand's representative team for this event and is considered to be the pinnacle representative team in Youth Sailing. In addition to each of the individual sailors own ambitions to succeed at this event, the world's leading yachting nations recognize the Volvo Nations Team Trophy as a barometer of youth sailing programmes. New Zealand has established a strong history of success at this event and has won the Volvo Trophy twice in the past. 1994 - Marathon Greece, then again in Lunenberg Canada in 2002.
